Two adventurers were confirmed dead after getting trapped in the falling water when abseiling down a waterfall in southwest China's Guizhou Province, local authorities said on Tuesday.

The two were among a group of six backpackers who tried to climb down the Dishuitan Waterfall in Guanling Buyi and Miao Autonomous County on Sunday, the county government said.

One was trapped in the middle of the cascade and could not escape the falling water, while another got stuck while trying to help his trapped companion, rescuers said.

Rescuers retrieved the two bodies on Tuesday afternoon. The complicated terrain and difficult access to the waterfall slowed down the rescue mission.

The 410-meter-high Dishuitan Waterfall has been popular among adventurous backpackers.
