China's players react at the end of the France 2019 Women's World Cup round of sixteen football match between Italy and China, on June 25, 2019, at La Mosson stadium in Montpellier, south western France.

China coach Jia Xiuquan said Tuesday that his team had done a good job and that he would take the responsibility for the loss to Italy.

China staged the best performance in the ongoing FIFA Women's World Cup on Tuesday but still suffered a 2-0 defeat to the Azzurre in the round of 16.

"We couldn't win the game and I apologize to all the Chinese fans. This is football, whoever makes mistakes first has to pay. My players have done a good job, I will be responsible for the loss."

"The World Cup is a big stage and it makes us realize our shortcomings. We can't dwell on the past or any past glories. Our girls have given their best. We are fully aware of our potential. We will reflect on everything well once we return home."

China had showcased a solid defense but just scored one goal in their three group matches. Today, they conceded two.

Jia said, "Football is not just a matter of offense or defense. We need balance on the pitch."

It has been 13 months since Jia took over the team last year.

Jia said, "The players trained hard and had self-discipline which impressed me most. They had ups and downs in the past year, so did France and United States. It is a universal problem. Women's football has its own character. I am exploring."

"I haven't played World Cup as a player, so the Women's World Cup in France made up my regrets and enriched my coaching experience."

Jia also disclosed he had not considered his future in this team. "I have good relationship with my players. It is too early to talk about the issue."
