Father and son dodge tragedy after escalator eats itself

A father and son from Ningguo City of Anhui Province had a narrow escape after a supermarket escalator behind them began falling apart on July 28, thepaper.cn reported.

As security video showed, the escalator suddenly began breaking apart just seconds after the pair got off it at 8:42pm.

Security staff at the supermarket stopped the escalator immediately. No one was injured in the incident.

According to an initial investigation, the rubber rollers of the escalator fell apart and its bearings came off after a bicycle key became stuck inside the mechanism.

The market watchdog urged the supermarket to stop using the escalator and promised to launch a security check across the city.
