Artificial Intelligence startup SenseTime said it will set up its Chinese headquarters in Shanghai, highlighting the city’s attraction to top-level AI firms.

SenseTime is one of the world’s richest AI private firms after raising US$620 million in May 2018. It offers AI features covering facial recognition, medical image recognition and smart driving.

“Shanghai welcomes firms like SenseTime to join the AI wave. It fuels the economic transformation and changes people’s daily lives,” said Wu Jincheng, chairman of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology.

At present, Shanghai has more than 1,000 AI firms with a strong AI ecosystem, including rich talent resources and a good investment environment, Wu told the SenseTime AI Forum on Saturday, a part of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference.

SenseTime will develop various applications in Shanghai covering transportation, retail and payment systems. Its development will also be tailored in line with China’s tradition and culture, Xu Li, Co-founder and CEO of SenseTime, told the forum.

The forum attracted experts from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, MIT and the University of Chicago.
