KLM officials and locals take part in a race at Century Park in the Pudong New Area to celebrate the airline's 100th anniversary.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines celebrated their 100th anniversary in Shanghai with a fun run at Shanghai Century Park over the weekend.

Over 1,000 runners dressed in the airline's blue took part in the last leg of its the global celebration of the carrier, the world’s oldest airline still operating under its original name.

In 1919, aviation pioneer Albert Plesman founded the airline. It now operates between Amsterdam and more than160 destinations.

"China market is always one of KLM’s most important markets in the world, and Chinese customers are always at the heart of KLM,” said Toon Balm, general manager of Air France KLM China told the celebration in Shanghai.

KLM made its first direct flight to Beijing in 1996 and to Shanghai in 1999. KLM now operates 39 flights weekly to 7 destinations and has also signed a memorandum of understanding with China Eastern and Virgin Atlantic to extend operations between China and Europe.
