Phone users changing operators can keep their numbers

Shanghai government says switching to a different company after your contract ends no longer has to mean losing your phone number.

Shanghai residents will be able to switch phone companies while keeping their numbers from December 1, the city government said on Wednesday.

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology had urged the country's three operators — China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom — to achieve number portability nationwide before the end of November.

Anyone wanting to switch operators, except those with numbers starting with 157 or 188, can do so once their current contract ends and if they have no outstanding bills.
