Firms, researchers and officials attend an AI forum held in Shanghai on Friday.

Shanghai has sped up steps to build itself into an “AI highland” amidst deeper integration of the Yangtze River Delta region, officials said at a conference devoted to this topic on Friday.

Shanghai now has over 1,100 artificial intelligence companies with operations in the city, including leading names like Microsoft, Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent and iFlytek, said Chen Mingbo, deputy-secretary general of the Shanghai government.

Meanwhile, more firms in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui provinces have joined the Shanghai AI Development Alliance. Many related firms will also attend AI WIN, part of the World Artificial Intelligence Corp, a top-level AI event held annually in Shanghai.

Shanghai’s research organizations are actively seeking cooperation with universities and researchers in neighboring provinces, representatives from Fudan University told the conference.

Medical, finance and smart driving are most active sectors of AI, which can influence millions of people, analysts told the forum.
