The three-day 2017 Shanghai Design Week will kick off on September 1 at the Shanghai Exhibition Center. It will focus on the function of design and how it would “redefine” city and life through imagination and creativity.

The 15,000-square-meter outdoor space and the main hall at the Shanghai Exhibition Center will be transformed into a “design fairyland” where the traditional techniques collide with new design ideas, or a cooperation of multi-media expression.

For example, how can a piece of soft lumber function? In the eyes of many, a cork on a bottle might do. But at the exhibition booth of Amosealtex, this environmentally friendly material will combine green technology and ordinary life items. Under the hands of the designers, the soft lumber is made into chairs, bags, name-card holders and a wine rack.

Another highlight is a collective display of products promoted by Shanghai Public Art Cooperation Center which aims at developing and inheriting traditional handicrafts. The combination of intangible cultural heritage with contemporary, or Western, design concepts is a collision of the modern and the ancient, and Oriental techniques and Western ideas.

Besides exhibition, the 2017 Design Week also includes seminars, design salons and contests. A series of activities will take place in some of the city’s shopping malls, office buildings and hotels.
