A concert by the National Youth Orchestra was held last Thursday at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center.

Founded in 2016, NYO-China has the goal of providing China’s finest young musicians access to world-class education and performance opportunities.

Accompanied by International Chopin Piano Competition winner Garrick Ohlsson and led by returning conductor Ludovic Morlot, the full 100-piece ensemble is now in Europe.

It is set to perform at renowned festivals including Germany’s Young Euro Classic on August 5, the United Kingdom’s Snape Proms on August 7, and Italy’s Bolzano Festival on August 9.

Each year since 2016, NYO-China has brought together exceptional young students for a training residency before an overseas tour with a world-renowned conductor and soloist.

The average age of students in NYO-China 2019 is 18 and they come from top music academies including Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Central Conservatory of Music and China Conservatory of Music.

One-third of the members are also furthering their overseas study at the Curtis Institute of Music and the Juilliard School.
