A young man from Guizhou Province has regained his health and returned to school after receiving a charity surgery for congenital heart disease at a local hospital.

The student is from a poor family. His father died in a car accident when he was young and his mother left the family due to the tragedy. He lives with his grandparents.

The boy, who is 18 years old, says he wants to become a doctor in the future.

He was found to have congenital heart disease during a health check in March last year. His condition deteriorated starting in July. “Doctors said I should receive surgery as soon as possible,” said the boy, whose family couldn’t afford the treatment costs.

A charity program sponsored by Shanghai Yodak Cardio-Thoracic Hospital went to Guizhou to offer free congenital heart disease screening and discounted treatment. The boy applied for help, and was eventually offered free surgery.

The boy arrived in Shanghai in the company of his uncle on August 11. He received a minimally invasive surgery to treat his congenital heart disease on August 15.

The boy has recovered and returned to his hometown to resume his studies and prepare for the college entrance exam next year, the hospital said.
