A 22-year-old teacher surnamed Liu in a Beijing kindergarten has been detained for suspected child abuse, Beijing police said Saturday.

Police received reports on November 22 from parents claiming their children were abused in RYB Education New World kindergarten in Chaoyang District.

Parents claimed their children were pierced by needles and given unidentified pills.

Police have also detained a 31-year-old woman surnamed Liu for spreading rumors about a group of children in the kindergarten being molested by others. Liu was detained under charges of suspected disturbing public order.

Liu was alleged to have confessed and showed remorse.

Beijing Education Commission strongly condemned the mistreatment of children and urged the kindergarten to tighten its management. The education commission has ordered safety checks in all kindergartens in the city, following the child abuse case.
