Police rule out terrorism in Sichuan Province bus explosion

A man was accused of causing an explosion on a bus in a southwest China city on Monday which injured 15 people including himself, local police said on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old suspect, surnamed Gu, was accused of setting off the blast on a No.2 bus in downtown Leshan City, Sichuan Province, at 6:35pm. He has been apprehended by police.

Gu, a local, has a history of drug use and theft, police said, without disclosing the motive for the attack. They did rule out terrorism, however. 

Gu was seriously injured while the other 14 injured suffered only minor wounds.

In videos circulated online, the explosion hit the bus while it was stopped at a crossroads. Heavy smoke was seen pouring out of the bus while passengers scrambled to escape. 

Police said further investigation was ongoing.
