Five primary school students have been killed and another 19 injured, including three critically, after a sedan ploughed into them in a northeastern Chinese city Thursday, the local government said.

The suspect, a 29-year-old man surnamed Han, drove his car into the group of children while they were crossing a street in front of No. 2 Primary School of Jianchang County, Huludao City, Liaoning Province, at 12:15pm, the county government said in a statement Friday.

Police said Han, unemployed and "paranoid," was suicidal after having an argument with his wife. He drove his car recklessly and randomly chose targets, police claimed.

Han was caught by police after the incident.

In a video circulated online, the car was shown driving at high speed in the wrong lane before it ploughed into the crowd of students.
