Sales of laser TV projectors will hit 1 million units in China by 2022 — 10 times the level of this year and making the technology as mainstream as large-size TVs.

Compared with traditional LCD TV, laser TV features easy support for big screens — up to twice the size of LCD TV screens — vivid color, low cost and high definition.

Laser TV is essentially a projector, displaying the image on an external surface.

Industry giants including Suning, Hisense, Changhong and PPTV expect to sell more than 100,000 laser TV units in 2019, mainly between 70 and 150 inches, the companies said at a summit held in Nanjing on Thursday.

But sales are expected to hit 1 million by 2022, boosted by government incentives, new display technologies, consumer upgrades and subsidized trade-ins, said Peng Jianfeng, deputy secretary general of the China Video Industry Association.

In 2018, laser TV sales in China jumped almost five times year on year, marking a “golden start” for the whole industry.

Consumers can get trade-ins of between 500 yuan (US$74.3) and 2,000 yuan on Hisense laser TVs.

Laser is the best choice for big-screen TVs — those over 100 inches — said Hisense, China’s biggest TV vendor.

Mainstream LCD TVs range between 55 inches and 75 inches.
