Chongming wins bid for China Flower Expo
Known for its abundance of flora, Chongming Island in Shanghai will host the 10th China Flower Expo in 2021, spread over an area of 10 square kilometers.
CHONGMING District has won the rights for the 10th China Flower Expo in 2021.
The expo will be staged at the Dongping National Forest Park from March 24 to July 1, 2021, over an area of 10 square kilometers.
With more than 500 years’ history of growing flowers, Chongming will combine the fields, routes, village and lanes to make it a visual treat for the expo.
Themed “Blossom with Chinese Dream,” the expo will be divided into three key zones — an north-south axis, a circular flower creek belt, and core exhibition, forest and services areas.
The core area will be a peony-shaped flower field with plum blossom, orchid, louts and chrysanthemum. The flower creek will be created in the shape of a sickle — part of the emblem of the Communist Party of China to mark the 100th anniversary.
The indoor flower exhibition will be set up in an area of 60,000 square meters and will feature species from different parts of the world.
The outdoor exhibition will take up an area of 160 hectares incorporating flower association exhibition and sister cities exhibition. The aquatic flowers exhibition area will boast a 5km flower creek belt.
Elsewhere, there will be room for floriculture performances and industry forums.
With temperate oceanic climate and rich water sources, Chongming Island is good for cold-tolerant flower species especially flowering bulbs.
The island is also famous for fragrant narcissus, saffron crocus and Anthurium. The highly fragrant Chongming narcissus is jade-white with a golden center. It’s one of the two most famous varieties in China — the other is in Zhangzhou in Fujian Province.
The Chongming narcissus is smaller, more delicate and sweeter in fragrance and lasts longer than the Zhangzhou variety.
Organic farming produces vegetables and fruits on the island. Natural wetlands, fresh air and clean waterways have made the island an ideal getaway for those seeking a respite from the chaos of urban life.

The expo features 1 a theme displaying axis, 2 a flower creek belt, 3 core exhibition area, 4 forest area and 5 facility services area.
Core exhibition area:
The core area is a peony shaped flower field with plum blossom, orchid, louts and chrysanthemum. The flower creek will be in the shape of a sickle, which is a part of the CPC emblem, and aims to celebrate its 100th anniversary.
Highlights:
There are two established areas: flower association exhibition and sister cities exhibition. The aquatic flowers exhibition area will create a 5km flower creek belt.
Domestic Flower Exhibition Area
Covering an area of 7 hectares, it will display outdoor flowers from different regions in China.
Garden Flower Exhibition
With an area of 36 hectares, it will feature household garden flowers.
Flower Species Exhibition Area
Stretching over an area of 36 hectares, it will be located at the southwest part of the Dongping National Forest Park.
