Rescuers have found five bodies after a cargo ship sank off Shanghai early Sunday morning, according to the city's maritime authorities Monday.

At 5pm Monday, five people remained missing, and search and rescue efforts were still ongoing, according to the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration.

On Sunday morning, the freighter Shunqiang 2, carrying 3,000 tonnes of rolled steel, collided with another vessel and sank in the Wusongkou anchorage in Shanghai on its way from east China's Nanjing to Guangzhou in south China, causing 13 people to fall overboard. Only three have been rescued so far.

The Shanghai Maritime Search and Rescue Center dispatched 10 coastal patrol vessels, two towboats and two salvage ships to the site to help with the rescue.
