Shanghai Mayor Ying Yong met Shing-Tung Yau, Harvard University tenure professor, and his delegation on Tuesday.

Ying said Shanghai is working hard to build itself into an international center for economy, finance, trade, and shipping, as well as a technology and innovation hub.

The city is also building a first-class Big Science facility cluster that focuses on key fields such as integrated circuit (IC), artificial intelligence (AI) and biomedicine.

Shanghai will use its advantages in its rich application landscape in AI, IC, talent pool and industries to attract more companies and research institutes, and build a national AI highland.

The city welcomes Yau and other top scientists to come to Shanghai and develop industries in the fields of AI, the Big Data and mathematics. It will also strive to create a good environment for the scientists, the mayor added.

Yau, a Fields Medal winner, said China’s economy has seen rapid growth and its technologies have grown exponentially. But it’s also important for China to focus more on basic science and build first-class science and research institutes.
