Shanghai has decided to do more to improve adult education, especially Shanghai Open University and its many branches across the city.

According to Yuan Wen, president of the Open University, the biggest adult education institution in the city, the university has 500,000 students, or around 14 percent of all university students.

The university will admit more students and continue to provide flexible schedules for those who want to continue their education or improve their academic accomplishments, allowing learners to accumulate credits in its lifelong educational credit bank and eventually gain diplomas.

The school will develop smart learning centers to support online activities and improve services for students, ultimately resulting in individualized teaching and learning programs.

The Open University will continue to work closely with the government, industry and businesses to keep courses in line with the real needs of the job market, inviting more professionals to participate in curricular design and to teach part-time. More full-time teachers will also be sent to spend time in enterprises to familiarise themselves with current market trends.
