Shanghai authorities encouraged state-owned enterprises to revive time-honored brands with the introduction of new measures on Friday.

Vice Mayor Chen Yin said these measures were similar to “four ways of diagnosis in traditional Chinese medicine: observe, listen, question and feel the pulse, which can comprehensively solve the problems hassling the time-honored brands.”

Among the 17 measures, issued by the city’s commerce commission and its state-owned assets supervision and administration commission, are those that require time-honored brands to set three-year revival plans and ensure their implementation; enhancement of supervision and assessment of brand performance and operation; promotion of reform and innovation and the provision of favorable policies.

Chen said the revival of time-honored brands is significant in promoting the “four brands of Shanghai” — services, manufacturing, shopping and culture.

At present, 65 percent of time-honored brands in Shanghai are run by state-owned enterprises.

There are a total of 222 time-honored brands in Shanghai. Some 30 percent are said to be competitive, while 60 percent have much room for improvement and 10 percent lag behind.

On Friday, the annual China Time-honored Brands Expo opened at the Shanghai Exhibition Center. The expo, running through Monday, exhibited products of more than 200 time-honored brands from across the country. Many products were combining their traditional features with trendy features, trying to present new faces that can attract consumers of younger age.
