Children suffering from autism perform at Shanghai Gongyi Xintiandi on Tuesday to mark the second China Charity Day.

A fund helping children in the city suffering from autism will be used to help patients and their families.

It was set up by civil affairs authorities and Shanghai Charity Foundation on Tuesday.

"The fund will support autism programs and promote the research of autism," said Shi Nanchang, vice chairman of the foundation.

One in every 58 new born babies has autism.

Renowned 92-year-old Chinese conductor Cao Peng was appointed the ambassador of autism care at the ceremony. He called for more understanding and care for autism patients and their families.

Tuesday marked the second China Charity Day.
