Beetle threat to agriculture found and destroyed
A beetle, which could cause serious agricultural damage, was found on a shipment from Poland and destroyed, the city's entry and exit authorities said yesterday.
Maladera Orientalis, a species of beetle, was found when officials at the Waigaoqiao port inspected the shipment of emergency power backup system, said the Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau.
It said that was the first time the beetle had been found at the port.
Officials said the herbivore beetle had devastated fruit trees and forests in China’s northern region, adding that they had quarantined the goods from Poland to protect the country’s eco-system.
