Doctors were out in force at Heping Park Wednesday morning, offering free consultations, blood pressure and blood sugar tests as November 14 is World Diabetes Day.

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic complaints among Shanghai citizens. According to Shanghai Health Commission, 24.3 percent of the population between 60 and 74 are diabetic. Of those over the age of 75, the figure rises to 31.3 percent.

An early diagnosis and treatment is encouraged by the city government. Shanghai’s medical system has provided risk evaluations to over 1 million patients since 2015. 

Other activities to mark this year’s World Diabetes Day include lectures, consultations and blood sugar tests in over 30 local hospitals in the next few days.
