A woman has been detained for spreading a rumor that traffic police fined a man 50 yuan (US$7.50) for walking his child in a baby stroller down a bike lane, police said on Saturday.

The woman, surnamed Wang, claimed that the man was fined for using a lane with traffic from the other direction when riding a non-motor vehicle, police said, but the man actually only received a warning for walking in a bike lane as a pedestrian.

Police said Wang spread the rumor on the Internet because she herself was fined 50 yuan for riding a bike in a lane with traffic from the other direction.

Wang on the scene of her traffic offense

Wang’s offense took place on March 23 near the intersection of Jutai and Baoju roads in Baoshan District.

Wang could face the criminal charge of “picking a quarrel and making trouble,” police said.

Police explained that any pedestrian when caught making a traffic offense the first two times will receive a warning, and from the third time on they will be fined.
