The ongoing 12th China Art Festival is a feast of traditional theater from all over the country.

The Huagu (flower-drum) Opera “The Story of Hexi Village” revolves around the connections between two village families and is a realistic reflection of the rapid changes in China’s villages since reform and opening-up began. It will be presented at the Daning Theater on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Qinqiang Opera is popular in northwest China. Modern Qinqiang Opera “Wang Gui and Li Xiangxiang” has been performed more than 60 times since its debut in 2017. Adapted from a long poem by Li Ji, it is a love story between two young farmers. The show will be staged on Tuesday night at Shanghai City Theater.

Peking Opera “Yang Jingyu” pays tribute to hero Yang Jingyu who sacrificed his life fighting Japanese invaders during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1931-1945). It will be staged on Wednesday and Thursday at the convention center of Baoshan District's Party school.

On Thursday and Friday, Huangmei Opera “Deng Jiaxian,” an Anhui Province speciality, will be staged at the Shanghai Mass Arts Center. “Deng” is the story of the development of China’s first atom and hydrogen bombs.
