Shanghai Youth Development Foundation has teamed up with Shanghai Xinshijie Eye Hospital to launch a campaign on myopia prevention and control.

The campaign will provide support and funding for students’ screening and treatment.

About 53.6 percent of students in the nation suffer from myopia, while the incidence is three percentage points higher in Shanghai.

A student with myopia in primary school is very likely to develop serious myopia in adulthood if not given proper treatment, said Dr Lian Jingcai, president of Shanghai Xinshijie Eye Hospital. “Many parents don’t pay enough attention to their children’s eyesight. Serious myopia imposes irreversible damage on the vision.”

The project will organize doctors in screening and visits to schools. Those found with problems will receive monitoring and treatment.
