Children with burn injuries and have been treated at Ruijin Hospital returned there on Friday with their parents for a summer camp, of entertainment, support and treatment.

Doctors said children with burns usually require at least one year of treatment and rehabilitation. For some serious cases, the treatment can last for several years with repeated surgery.

“Many children suffer problems like anxiety and depression,” said Dr Liu Yan from Ruijin Hospital’s burns department, which also works with many charity funds to provide treatment for children from poor families.

“We organized the summer camp to bring children with injuries together, giving them courses in dancing and singing. Many become happier and more confident,” she said.

Zhang Xiong, vice director of Shanghai Health Commission, said Ruijin Hospital is creating a facility offering a whole process of child burn care including prevention, treatment and rehabilitation and calling for more support for children with these injuries.

Dr Liu Yan said accidents causing children's burns are becoming less infrequent because of public education. “Many parents understand emergency treatment soon after the accident takes place at home, greatly reducing injuries and complications,” she said.

Doctors said accident is still the top cause of children’s burns and many accidents are preventable.
