While traffic cameras watching out for multiple offenses have been monitoring Shanghai's local roads for some time, they have recently started to appear on the city's expressways as well.

Shanghai traffic police said on Thursday that two such cameras installed near the ramp to Jiasong Road N. on the G1503 expressway have nailed 108 offenses since October 9.

The cameras are said to be able to catch motorists not wearing seat belts, holding mobile phones to their ears when driving, occupying emergency lanes, illegally parking their vehicles, switching lanes over solid traffic lines and cutting across two lanes at once, among other driving infractions.

So far, the most frequent offense was changing lanes over solid traffic lines and other violations of prohibitive traffic marks, involving 79 motorists, police said.

Also, 12 motorists have been caught cutting across two lanes at once, and 10 were caught not wearing a seat belt, according to the police.

Police said such cameras will be later installed in more spots along the city’s expressways.
