Toll gate removal underway

The removal of nine toll gates at the city's borders with Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces is in full swing. Shanghai Transportation Commission said they will all be demolished before December 20.
The commission said three had already been torn down and work on another five had begun.
China has launched a campaign to cancel manual charging of toll fees and recommends that cars be fitted with devices which will automatically deduct toll fees when they cross the borders.
By the end of this year, the commission is expecting at least 90 percent of all cars registered in Shanghai to have electronic toll collection (ETC) devices.
While demolishing the toll gates, frames for ETC detection equipment will be built and all traffic lanes will be renovated. There will be one lane left at each toll gate for cars not fitted with ETC devices.
