Doctors have successfully removed a 40-centimeter-long tumor and extracted 16,000 milliliters of fluid from the stomach cavity of a 15-year-old-girl, Shanghai International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital announced on Tuesday.

The girl’s stomach began to swell about two months ago, and by the time she went to see doctors she was described as looking like a pregnant woman. Upon inspection, local hospital examiners found a massive tumor in one of the girl's ovaries.

“The most effective and direct treatment is to remove the ovary,” said Dr Wang Yudong from the hospital’s gynecological oncology department. “But considering the age of the patient and her future life, we decided to keep the ovary. Even though the test found it was cancer, we will also adopt treatment to preserve her fertility.”

Doctors also used a special tool, a single-hole laparoscope, to reduce scaring from the surgery.

Fortunately, tissues removed from the tumor showed it to be benign.

Doctors extracted liquid from the tumor and removed the entire mass during a 3-hour surgery.

The patient recovered well and was discharged two days after the operation.
