No T-shirts on Tuesday for these pedestrians in Shanghai.

Shanghai residents were preparing for chilly days again as the weather shifted from spring to winter overnight.

People who were wearing T-shirts and enjoying ice cream on Monday will have to put on their coats for the rest of the week with the arrival of cold wind and rain.

The predicted cold front arrived earlier than expected on Tuesday.

At 12:05pm, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued two blue alerts for cold weather and gales.

It forecast that due to the influence of strong cold air from northern China, temperatures would drop to 4 to 5 degrees Celsius in downtown areas on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Suburban areas in the city's southern and northern parts will see lows between 2 and 3 degrees.

Strong winds are expected on Wednesday morning when it will be cold and dry with temperatures ranging from 4 to 8 degrees. Thursday will be the same but there will be drizzle.

The rain will increase late on Friday with temperatures rising to between 6 and 10 degrees.

Saturday will be the last mild day with a high of 11 and a low of 9, and rainy conditions will continue on Saturday.

Another round of temperature drops will be seen on Sunday with the high falling to 8 degrees. But the rain is expected to taper off to drizzle on Sunday, and there will be a cloudy start to next week.
