Shanghai Health Commission said on Sunday it has stepped up screening for suspected coronavirus-related pneumonia.

After the cases reported in Wuhan, Shanghai has organized expert teams and established emergency plans and measures.

Winter and spring are peak seasons for certain infectious diseases due to cold weather and poor ventilation indoors. Common infectious diseases include flu, bird flu, epidemic meningitis, measles, chicken pox and norovirus infection, according to Shanghai Health Commission.

Shanghai has entered the peak season for respiratory infectious diseases like flu and scarlet fever, but the epidemic level is the same with previous years.

The authority said proper ventilation, exercises, a healthy diet, good personal hygiene like hand washing and avoiding crowded places are all effective in preventing the spread of infectious diseases.

Flu shots is the most effective measure for the elderly, children and people who are weak.

It is important to visit a hospital if suffering symptoms including fever, coughing, rashes, headaches or frequent vomiting. People who are sick should rest at home.
