Shanghai's greenery authorities and market watchdogs closed 40 pet shops in Shanghai and halted the trade in birds and other wild animals at three markets on Friday to curb the spread of the coronavirus infection.

The markets involve the Jiangyang, Wanshang and Lanling flower and bird markets, the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau said.

A total of 25 wild animal breeding centers, farm produce markets, flower and bird markets and animal display venues were inspected by officials on Friday with regard to their quarantine and disinfection measures.

All wild animal transactions and close-up displays are suspended in the city.
