Substandard masks found at the office of Shanghai Youmu Food Co

Shanghai's market watchdog is investigating a company in Putuo District for selling 890,000 substandard facial masks online, involving 1.82 million yuan (US$260,000), authorities said on Saturday.

The Shanghai Administration for Market Regulation said it had received 21 complaints about Shanghai Youmu Food Co, since January 27, over fake and substandard masks. It conducted an inspection at the company on Friday.

The company purchased the masks from another firm in Hubei Province, but could provide no qualification certificate, production date or invoice, the administration said.

Youmu sold masks it purchased for 10, 15, and 32 yuan by 88, 99 and 129 yuan respectively, according to the administration.

It also fabricated an inspection report and sold common masks as N90 masks for medical use, claiming a microbes filtration function.

A total of 6,600 boxes of these masks have been sold for nearly 680,000 yuan.

The company is being investigated for fraud, gouging and selling substandard masks. The case will now be handled over to police.
