Recyclable masks, which can be used over 20 times with proper treatment, are now being mass produced in Shanghai to meet surging demand from local residents.

The masks, made with nanometer materials technology, have a KN95-level filterability. They are effective for about 200 hours and can be repeatedly used 10 to 20 times with sterilization by hot water and medical alcohol, according to developers.

The new mask is developed by the Shanghai Juchen Baby Clothing Co and the Shanghai Hanpu New Material Technology Co.

The co-development is authorized by the Shanghai Commission of Economy and Informatization, which also supports materials supplies and connections between market demand and new technologies.

Each mask costs about 15 to 25 yuan (US$2.1-3.6).

On Monday, daily production capacity of the new masks hit 100,000 units, and will reach 300,000 units by Friday.

Besides government orders, the masks will be sold online including on platforms like Pinduoduo.

The mask is designed for civil use only.
