The organizing committee of the 2020 World Artificial Intelligence Conference on Thursday announced the winners of this year's Super AI Leader Award (SAIL) awards, decided by a panel of experts.

Zhang Xu, judge of the awards and an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that "AI technology and theory have ushered in a new era. Technology implementation and breakthroughs are the key to Shanghai's AI development."

Five projects won SAIL awards this year, mainly involving projects related to intelligent platforms, hardware and COVID-19 solution.

Five projects including IBM Project Debater, United Imaging's AI solution, Baidu's language-learning algorithm, Carnegie Mellon University's automated causal discovery platform and Tsinghua University's hardware-implemented memristor convolutional neural network were awarded the SAIL awards during the ceremony.

The SAIL awards represent trends in AI development worldwide and the technological level of AI applications. They are also meant to accelerate related research results and application scenarios.

Chen Jie, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering and president of Tongji University; and Tang Xiao'ou, founder of SenseTime, presented the SAIL awards.

Hu Yu, co-founder of Chinese artificial intelligence company iFlytek, said "For this year's SAIL projects, there are both world-leading research results and practical applications which can be implemented in China. Global leading technology and good results are fully reflected in SAIL award winners."

The 2020 SAIL awards were issued in four categories: the Superior Award to be conferred to a highly praised and welfare-linked program; the Applicative Award for an application program for improving social efficiency; the Innovative Award presented to the program that uses world-leading technologies in the field; and the Leading Award for pioneering basic theories, methods and models in the AI field.
