Shanghai's top three killers are tumors and diseases of the circulatory and respiratory systems, an annual health conference heard yesterday.

Congenital deformities and tumors are the leading causes of deaths among newborns and infants.

The city said it will look at ways to improve the general physician service at neighborhood health centers for chronic diseases, push public health reform, and work on the disease prevention network this year.

The obstetric and pediatric service will also be improved following the two-child policy, the Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission said.

A classified health system will be developed to ensure patients receive convenient and high-quality service near their residence, officials said.
