The inner footpath around the moat of Jiading District opened to the public this week. The outer path, which on the other side of the waterway, will open in September, said district officials.

The moat has a history of more than 800 years, and is still used today for commercial shipping.

In the past, isolated footpaths along the moat were separated by residential communities, illegal structures, roads and bridges. The district government started plans to link the paths last October.

One section of the path goes through Shanghai University, and the university opened this area of its campus to the public.

The government has also built recreational facilities along the waterway near communities.
