Great Britain won six gold and one silver medals in the 2018 FISU World University Rowing Championship over the weekend, ranking the first among the 23 countries and regions participating in the event.

Next were Italy with three gold, three silver and five bronze medals.

China took third place with two gold, two silver and one bronze medals, a best for China in the history of the FISU World University Rowing Championship.

China’s first gold medal in this year’s event was won by two female students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Antai College of Economics and Management in the double sculls.

It was also the second gold medal won by China in the history of the event after a Chinese team formed by students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University won the first fold medal in 2006 when the event was held in Hungary.

The two students, Zhu Yiqing and Zhang Shuxian, said they had been rowing for eight years since they began in middle school. During their study at the university, they spent at least two hours in training every day.

China also won a gold medal in the lightweight women’s double sculls, two silver medals in the men’s single sculls and lightweight women four, as well as a bronze in women’s single sculls.

The FISU World University Rowing Championship has been held in Europe 14 times since 1984 by the International University Sports Federation, and has attracted more than 5,000 students from all over the world.

It was the first time that the biennial event was staged outside Europe. This year's event was organized by Shanghai Jiao Tong University at the Shanghai Water Sports Center in Qingpu District.

A total of 322 university students from 23 countries and regions, including the United States, Great Britain, Germany and Italy, participated in this year’s Shanghai event. The students competed in 16 categories of rowing games from August 10 to 12.

The next FISU World University Rowing Championship will take place in Croatia in 2020.
