A man who worked as a chef at a seafood restaurant has been detained for allegedly stealing expensive lobsters and crabs from his employer, police said on Tuesday.

Police in Putuo District started their investigation at the end of August after the restaurant, located on Jinshajiang Road, reported that some seafood had mysteriously vanished from their inventory.

Using surveillance cameras inside the storage room, police spotted a suspicious man stealing seafood from the water tanks several times in the month before the theft was discovered.

The suspect is now under detention.

The man was soon found to be a chef, surnamed Tan, who worked at the restaurant.

Tan allegedly confessed that he had stole lobsters, shrimps and crabs from his employer 10 times. He either cooked the stolen seafood at home or had it cooked at other restaurants.

Tan said he stole the seafood because he loves the taste, police said.

The stolen seafood was estimated to be worth about 13,000 yuan (US$1,880), according to police.
