Huge tumor successfully removed from baby's neck
A newborn baby who had a large tumor on her neck removed with the help of Shanghai Children's Medical Center recovered and left hospital on Monday, the center said.
The tumor, similar in size to her head, was seriously pressing on the airway of the four-day-old when she was sent to the center.
According to the center, the baby girl was born two weeks ago in a hospital in Qidong, neighboring Jiangsu Province. However, after she was delivered, medics discovered the large tumor on the left of her neck. The girl soon developed difficulty breathing.
She was then transferred to the Shanghai Children's Medical Center, where doctors found the tumor was still growing and the baby's breathing was getting becoming weaker.
To release the airway from compression, doctors used a tracheal intubation with a diameter of only 2.5 millimeters to push the tumor aside. The tumor was then removed safely.
The center has practiced over 500 tumor-removing surgeries on newborn babies.
