City plans to replace 1,240 kilometers of underground water pipes by 2020

The city water authority plans to replace 1,240 kilometers of underground water pipes by the end of 2020. Most have been in use for over 50 years.

This year, 300 kilometers will be replaced. On Jinshajiang Road, pipes were laid in the 1970s and the quality of the material used was poor. Scaling inside the pipes is polluting the water and the pipe is vulnerable to bursting, causing traffic jams.

Replacing old pipes can be tricky as many cables, pipes and military optical cable are buried alongside. To minimize the impact of construction, a new pipe will be laid inside the old cast iron pipe.

Construction started in December and is expected to finish around the end of March.
