Eleven of the world’s top Lego master builders and 30 local children created a “future vertical city” together yesterday at Shanghai Tower, the second-tallest building in the world.

Currently, Lego only recognizes 19 master builders who have turned their passion into a profession.

Yesterday, 11 of them worked with 30 kids from Shanghai World Foreign Language Primary School to build a seven-floor “building” with Lego bricks.

The building, covered with “plants,” contains offices, shops and art galleries, among other spaces, a truly “vertical community.” Powered by sugar canes, a new green source of electricity, it can be lit up.

Weiwei Gluckman, one of the 11 Lego Certificated Processionals, said she was greatly impressed by the environmentally-friendly design of the building, like the rain-collection system and indoor gardens.

Huang Yenchih from Taiwan worked with children to make the cultural and art space.

“My job is to inspire the children to think what they want to put in this building. They told me that they like to go to libraries, museums and art galleries. So I told them that they can make some statues of people and animals,” he said.

The children proposed statues of a violin, a dinosaur and a book.

Cao Xinyi, 10, said she wanted to make a rabbit. “I love rabbits, for no reason. And I can put the rabbit in the garden and feed it with carrot,” she said.

The “building” will be displayed on the 119th floor of Shanghai Tower for the next six months. During that time, there will be a variety of activities related to building with Lego.
