A variety of activities to raise people’s awareness of bird protection are underway through June 30 at the Shanghai Natural History Museum.

The three-month “Bird Season” series of activities started with a lecture on Saturday. Du Mingqiu, architectural acoustics professor at Tongji University, revealed the secrets of birdsong.

Also, more than 200 audience members used traditional Chinese musical instruments, including the bamboo flute, to play simple melodies and imitate the natural sounds of birds, wind and the rain.

Through April 28, an interactive exhibit allowing children to explore the birds’ world is being held on the B2 floor of the museum. It is decorated as a “wild camp” where children can wear costumes to become giant birds, see how eggs hatch and chicks mature, and use toys to “feed” birds with the correct “worms.”

On April 14, there will be an outdoor bird observation, and on May 18, local families can apply to stay overnight at the museum to experience a night with the birds. For more information, please check the museum’s official WeChat (snhm01).
