The Shanghai Institute of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Gynecological Oncology was established on Tuesday.

Leading experts from local hospitals and top institutes and hospitals in other provinces are members of the new institute’s academic commission to jointly study maternal-fetal medicine, women’s cancer and reproductive medicine, said Wan Xiaoping, president of Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital, where the institute is located.

“Through the institute, we want to boost woman and infant health by reducing incidence and mortality of women’s reproductive system disease, reducing the financial burden of birth and children’s disease and improving the ability of reproductive disease and inborn disability prevention,” said Wan, whose hospital delivers about 30,000 babies every year.

The new institute will place an emphasis on women’s reproductive cancers, especially the common ones.

The incidence of endometrial cancer has risen by nine times in the past 40 years in Shanghai, higher than that in developed countries. There are also more young patients than before, according to experts.

The new institute will make use of sample and molecular database and other biological methods to study the mechanism of cancer for precise treatment and to perfect clinical plans.

“The institute will also serve as a platform for information and case sharing and young talent cultivation to benefit more patients eventually,” Wan added.
