A man will be detained for nine days for vandalizing the Shanghai South Railway Station, police said on Thursday.

The man allegedly broke the lock to an entrance gate of the railway station at 2:20am on Monday and replaced it with an iron chain.

Railway workers discovered the vandalism later that morning.

The man surnamed Zhang was caught by police at 11am on Wednesday at the railway station.

Zhang has allegedly confessed and said he vandalized the station out of revenge against the police who had punished him with detention several times.

Police told Shanghai Daily that Zhang had been punished for theft, vandalism and disturbing public order before.
