Truck driver detained after taking wrong lane

A truck driver will spend 10 days behind bars for taking the wrong lane on an elevated road, traffic police said on Monday.

Trucks are banned from all elevated roads in Shanghai.

The driver, Huang, 50, drove the truck onto Yixian Elevated Road going up the down ramp at Changjiang Road at 6:45am on Monday morning, causing big congestion on the busy road during the rush hour.

He was stopped by traffic police five minutes after his offense was reported and claimed that he made a mistake because he was not familiar with his route.

Police said he was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Apart from detention, Huang was also fined 600 yuan (US$87) with 15 points deducted from his driving license, effectively annulling it as over 12 points have been deducted.
