The Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine organized the first auscultation -- using instruments such as stethoscopes -- master competition to highlight the value of listening to sounds from the body.

Teams of doctors below 40 from 13 affiliated hospitals competed. Shanghai Children’s Medical Center won first prize.

The competition aimed to encourage doctors to improve their basic skills and raise awareness of the practice's value as a diagnostic tool.

Sometimes, auscultation can find problems, which are not discovered by CT scans and other tests.

“Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine has been involved in training and cultivating excellent and innovative medical talent and the competition aims to improve and perfect young doctors’ skills and ability,” said Wu Zhengyi, vice director of the medicine school.

“We hope young doctors can grow quickly and better service the patients.”
