Nearly 500 works of art, from ink-wash paintings to calligraphy, purple-clay teapots and Buddha statues, will go under hammer at the 2019 Council Spring Auction on Friday at the Regal Shanghai East Asia Hotel.

Some of the big names at the auction include Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), Qi Baishi (1864-1957), Pan Tianshou (1897-1971), Xie Zhiliu (1910-1991) and Fu Baoshi (1904-1965).

“Madame Xiang” was created by Fu, one of the masters of modern Chinese art, in 1962. The painting shows an elegant lady standing solemnly among falling leaves.

From Xinyu, Jiangxi Province, Fu studied the history of oriental art at Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1933 and brought Japanese elements to ink-wash painting. He was noted for his integration of a poetic atmosphere and perfect technique.
