Rescuers in suburban Shanghai pulled a man from a river last week after he fell from a bridge while using his mobile phone.

The incident happened late on December 17 in Qingpu District, police said on Monday.

Police received a report at 11:20pm that a man was in the Dianpu River, under a bridge near Songquan Road.

When police arrived with firefighters and first-aid workers, the man was standing next to a bridge column in waist-deep water.

Police in a motorboat plucked the hapless man from the river at 11:45pm.

The man was cold from being in the water, but his condition was not serious, police said.

The man allegedly claimed that he was distracted by his mobile when he tumbled into the water.
