Starting from next Monday, all jaywalkers in Shanghai will be fined 20 yuan (US$2.90) if discovered by police officers, police said on Friday.

Since 2017, jaywalkers have been educated on zebra-crossing rules by the police if they were first-time offenders. They received admonition if caught a second time, and were fined from the third time on.

Police register the offenders’ Chinese identity card or passport number so as to track their offense records.

“A large number of offenders have been discovered in the past three years, and it has become common sense for people to abide by the rules,” Chen Zhen, vice director of Shanghai Public Security Bureau, told a press conference on Friday.
